Frequently Asked Questions

Which vehicles does it fit?

The Bus Shelter will fit most vehicles that feature a rain gutter or an awning channel. Roof racks or other fittings can affect the fit, so if you are unsure please contact Ian at The Bus Shelter for advice.

How does it fit?
Depending upon your vehicle and personal preference, we offer both a Pole and Clamp and a Figure of 8 method:

Pole and Clamp method – a 3-piece sectional aluminium pole is slipped inside a sleeve sewn into the awning, dropped into the gutter and held securely in place with three neoprene-lined gutter clamps.

Figure 8 method – utilizes a beaded edge on the awning which slides into a 3-piece plastic Figure of 8 extrusion which then slots onto the gutter and is held in place by the tension of the awning.

Which method will work best with my camper?
Split Screens tend to have a shallow gutter and the Figure 8 pieces easily slip off, therefore the pole and clamp method is recommended.

Bay Windows – both methods work well. If you have a 68-74 Devon elevating roof, the pole may not fit in the gutter with the roof down. Our own Bay is a 1970 model with a Devon roof and we have found that if you shift the roof over a fraction, it is perfectly possible to use the pole. However, if your roof doesn’t have much give, then go with the Figure 8 method instead.

Type 25’s – the pole and clamp works best. Some models can accept the Figure 8 pieces, but if your gutter features any form of beading, this may prevent its use.

Type 4’s, 5’s and other vehicles with a Multi Rail attached – the pole and clamp method works well. Alternatively, the awning can be made with an 8mm diameter beaded edge, which will slide into the channel on the rail. Contact us prior to ordering to discuss options.

If you think that your bus will take either method, then we recommend you use the pole and clamp option as it is the most secure of the two.

What other vehicles will it fit?
The Bus Shelter
has been supplied to fit Land Rovers, Mercedes Vans, Mazda Bongos, Pinzgauers and Eriba Puck Caravans. It can be made to fit most vehicles that feature a rain gutter or an awning channel. Contact us prior to ordering to discuss your requirements.

What does it comprise of?
The Bus Shelter

Total weight approx 3.3kg (2 poles) and 4.3kg (3 poles)

Length in holdall – 90cm / 3ft approx

Why do you offer two and three pole options?
The Bus Shelter
works fantastically well with two upright poles. With a third pole added it works even better and makes the awning more robust, especially in inclement weather. For custom designs wider than our standard awning, 3 poles are definitely recommended to support the larger awning.

What fabric do you use?
We use a 3.7oz polyurethane coated polyester, which is light but durable. As with most polyester and nylon fabrics, prolonged exposure to the sun may result in fading.

What colours are available, and can I have samples?
The Bus Shelter
is offered in WHITE, ROYAL BLUE, RED, NAVY BLUE, BLACK, GREEN, OLIVE and MAROON. If you want to see samples of the colours, just email us or give us a bell and let us have your snail mail address. We’ll get swatches in the post for you (free of charge).

Click on the Colours tab to see our full range.

Is the fabric waterproof?
Yes. However, we advertise our products as being showerproof rather than waterproof due to the fact that we have to use two pieces of fabric joined together using a tent seam. We do not treat or seal the seam, however, we have had no reports of water ingress. Please bear in mind The Bus Shelter was never designed to be storm proof!

Can you make me an awning from fabric that I will supply?
Shouldn’t be a problem, but please contact us first.

Custom Designs – want something a bit different?
We know that some of you may want that little something extra for your bus and as we don’t mass-produce, we are more than happy to discuss your specific requirements. Why not call us for a chat?

Is the Bus Shelter™ easy to erect and dismantle?
Absolutely. It was designed with simplicity in mind.

Do you make anything else?
Yes, we can make bespoke windbreaks and draught excluders that fit between your wheels – contact us for details. We also make Bushcraft Tarps which can be bought via our eBay Store

How do I order?
Simply order on-line using the easy ordering page or if you prefer a more personal approach then contact us direct to discuss your requirements. If you are UK based we can take payment over the telephone using either Visa or Visa Mastercard, or send us a cheque for the full amount in pounds sterling, made payable to Original Lizard. Alternatively, we can send you a Paypal invoice.

How long will my order take and how will it be delivered?
Delivery should be within 14 working days from receipt of order, but we will try our best to get your order to you much sooner. Delivery is by Parcel Force 48 hour service, but as they don’t deliver on weekends, it may be of benefit to have your awning delivered to your place of work if there is no-one home to sign for it. Once the awning has left us, we will advise you by email or telephone and provide you with the tracking number so you can follow its progress via Parcel Force’s tracking service

Do you deliver outside of the UK?
Our prices are for delivery to UK addresses only. We can ship to the Republic of Ireland for an additional cost of £35.00 and to the Channel Islands for an additional cost of £30.00 (Parcel Force, Global Priority, tracked) which can be paid for separately using paypal or credit card. We are happy to discuss sending awnings to other countries, but please contact us before ordering so that we can advise on the delivery costs involved.

What is your Returns Policy?
We will accept returns within 7 days of receipt in the unlikely event that you are unable to fit your awning to your vehicle, please call us to advise of any problems prior to return. If this is an error on our part, then a full refund will be issued. However, if you have incorrectly ordered, then we will credit you with the amount paid, less the delivery charge (usually £15.00). In both cases we would expect the item to be returned unscathed.
