A Brief History By Ian Chapman – Owner

Before embarking on our summer 2006 tour of Devon & Cornwall, we spent ages searching for a top quality, lightweight and shower proof sun canopy / campervan awning for our T2 VW bus, but nothing out there matched our requirements. So, always wanting to take on a challenge and test our grey matter, we set out to design and make our own. After several prototypes and some R&D in the wilds of Yorkshire, we finally settled on a design that we aptly named The Bus Shelter.

Following numerous compliments and enquiries from fellow v-dubbers during our trip, we can now offer this cool and easy to use campervan sun canopy to you.

Unlike similar, but often less well made camper van awnings / sun canopies on the market, our custom made caravanette / 4×4 / camper awning is available in a selection of eight cool colours to match your paintwork!  As everything we make is a one-off (unless you require one of each!), we are more than happy to offer you custom-sizes and design changes.

The Bus Shelter was originally designed to fit VW Split Screen Type 1’s (VW T1), Type 2 (VW T2), Bay Window and Type 25 (T25) campers, but we can now make our camper van awnings/canopies to fit VW T4’s, VW T5’s and a variety of other leisure vehicles such as the Mazda Bongo and Eriba Caravans, as long as your vehicle has a gutter or rail.  You even have a choice of how The Bus Shelter attaches to your vehicle – either using the Pole & Clamp method, Figure 8 Chanel or Multi-Rail (Reimo) attachment.  For more details go to the FAQ page.

Who are we?

We are a small business called Original Lizard and have been designing and manufacturing skydiving clothing and equipment and fleece winter headgear since 1992.  Consequently, we had all the relevant equipment and materials already in place to produce these top quality awnings. The Bus Shelter is hand crafted with care in our workshop in Yorkshire from components sourced in the UK.
